Our weekend breakaway at Misty Mountain Reserve by Raynard and Natalie Tissink

We drove down to Misty Mountain Reserve on Friday 25th September where we spent a wonderful and relaxing 3 nights . We had an extremely warm welcome from all the staff at Misty’s and felt very comfortable and at home. We stayed in the Family Chalet which had an enormous deck overlooking the ocean. It was magnificent.

As we arrived late on the Friday afternoon, there was no time for mountain biking, but we had a magical walk through the forest with the kids. Lawrence Van Lingen and his family had joined us for the weekend, and early Saturday morning we set out with Duncan to explore the mountain biking route. Unfortunately, Lawrence kept flatting which was rather frustrating so we only ended up riding about 30km of the Black Route. The part we saw was enjoyable and pretty easy riding on jeep track, no real technical parts. I think they were all further on, and we planned to tackle them the next morning. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side, and it started pouring with rain on Saturday night and most of Sunday. I also came down with a bit of flu, so that was where our mountain biking ended. It was a huge pity as I was really keen to tackle the rest of the ride.

We visited some of the tourist destinations in the area and relished in the meals served at Misty Mountain. We all came home slightly heavier than before. Natalie and the kids rode the 8km section and they absolutely loved it. Very easy and achievable for all ages.

The setting is fantastic. You feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere. It is so peaceful. We will definitely be back as soon as possible, as it was a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing break.

Well Done Dustin Machetto on doing so well in the Knysna MTB and Road Race

Dustin, one of our management team, completes the Knysna MTB and road race, this is what he had to say:

“Well to start off, as the days peeled off closer to my race day, I was wondering what I had got myself into. To make matters worse, when I was in the start gate surrounded by really fancy bikes and everyone geared up with camelpacks and top riding gear, I thought "what the hec have I got myself into!" My poor ride was also intimidated, as all I have is a trek 4300, its like i've got a mini surrounded with Mercs and BMW.

The trail was very taxing, a damn long up hill that pushed my heart rate through the roof for most of the ride, what made it difficult was my ride, an entry level bike with the front fork (pogo stick more likely not a fork) which wasn’t designed to do anything, I pushed it through, so I had very bad arm pump and pins and needle in my hands most of the down hills.

"All in all, I'M IN NEED OF A BETA STEED AND HAD A BLAST."

The next day I was a bit stiff in the legs, plus never had a seeding for the 100km event, so they started me right in the back of the pack. The first 5km sorted my legs out, getting rid of the lactic acid from the day before. I rode my own race, just passing cyclists all the time. About half way, I started catching the guys who had a better seeding than me, but still just carried on passing more and more cyclists. The last 30km was tough, my back and butt were taking its toll on me from the day before. At the end, my time 3:30 and I'm happy because that pushes my seeding all the way into the first gate for my next race (Herald 100km PE)

My goal….. I want a sub 3hour 100km ride, if the weather plays it’s role.”

We are proud of you Dust! We look forward to watching you in The Herald.

Mountain Biking News

Wow, Dustin, you're out there with the winners, don't underestimate yourself, 2h:17min is nothing, with all the MTB routes you're doing at Misty, you will close the gap in no time.

Congratulations to Burry, who won the race. This is what Dustin had to say: "Oh! and the best part, me and Burry Stander, the winner.

The only Difference between him and me is 2h:17min."

MOST UNUSUAL LANDING AT MISTY

We were delighted to have newly married Mr and Mrs Authur and Karen Webb from Webbs Arms and Webbs Luxury Goods and Tobacco from Port Elizabeth land on our front lawn in their helicopter. We are accustomed to "walk ins" but "fly ins" is most unusual and will certainly be be most welcome. We wish the Webb's all the best and congratulate them! From the Misty Team.

Students embark on a journey to SA

Nine students embarked on a journey to SA, their primary function working with the Ubuntu Education Fund in PE. While staying at Misty Mountain Reserve (the middle stop over on the luxurious Dolphin Hiking Trail) Dustin invited two of the guests to enjoy our mountain bike routes. This is what they had to say:

“Once we reached the cow pastures of Misty Mountain Reserve, all woes brought about from the trail seemed to instantly vanish. The reserve was located on the very edge of the high coastline and was surrounded by beautiful pine reserves. Once again we were seperated into roomates and branced off to explore our more luxurious cabins, or as the South Africans call them, challets. Jake and I were fortunate enough to have the honeymoon suite, outfitted with a small side den, and a larger bathroom...with a jaccusi bath. Ironically, just as I was about to take a short nap, Hurst dropped by asking if anyone wanted to go mountain biking with him. Being the bike-freak that I am, I couldnt resist. So, after our 5 hour hike allong the coast, Hurst and I sattled up allong with our host and now mountain bike guide, Dustin. Surprisingly, the 6'3"ish and easily 220lb man was an extrordinary biker. He and I had great fun exchanging bike stories and critiquing the various bikes on the market. The ride turned out to be just as beautiful as the hike itself. Once we returned to the reserve, Hurst calculated that we had rode 18 miles. 18 miles! We were astonished at how Hurst had attacked the technical and quite long trails with such power. Mr. MacAdoo was extremely happy that he had not accompanied us on the ride after hearing the distance.

After yet another delicious dinner, Dustin and I talked for about 3 hours about South African culture, converted just about everything from rands to dollars (7.8r to the dollar) and I got a whites perspective on the townships. Hurst and I also have our mountain biking pictures posted on the Misty Mountain Reserve. “

Val with Noeleen

Misty Mountain Reserve, was selected as one of the best destinations in South Africa for a great Summer escape. 8 Other lodge operators represented their provinces in South Africa.

Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu from 3 Talk with Noeleen (SABC 3), opened the topic on “great Summer escapes” Val Lane discussed the beauty of the Tsitsikamma forest, the magnificent sea views and lovely walks around Misty Mountain Reserve.

Noeleen expressed that it would be the perfect destination to escape city life and “unwind”. The advantage is that there are many exciting activities within close proximity. We were proud to be featured on this prestigious program.
